Overview

About Thermage

Thermage is a brand of monopolar radiofrequency treatment. It delivers heat to the deeper layers of the skin while the surface is cooled, which tightens existing collagen and encourages new collagen to form over the following months.

It is usually done in a single session on the face, around the eyes, the neck or the body. The tightening is gradual and modest, and it does not remove excess skin. It is generally best suited to mild laxity rather than significant sagging.

Suitability

Who it may be suitable for

  • Mild skin laxity on the face, neck or body
  • Wanting gradual improvement with little downtime
  • No pacemaker or other implanted electronic device
  • Not pregnant or breastfeeding, and no active skin infection or cold sore in the area

These are general points only. Whether a treatment is suitable for you is decided by the treating clinician after examining you in person and reviewing your medical history and current medication.

The process

How it works

  1. Photo review

You share photos and a short description of what bothers you. The clinician gives a first view of which options may help and which are unlikely to.

  2. In-person assessment

The clinician examines your face and skin, goes through your medical history and explains the expected effect, its limits and the risks before you consent.

  3. Treatment

A temporary grid is marked on the skin, and the device tip is passed over each square, delivering heating pulses while cooling the surface.

  4. Check and aftercare

You receive written aftercare instructions and a contact for questions. A review is arranged in person or by photos, depending on how long you stay.

Aftercare

What to expect and aftercare

  1. First days

Mild redness, swelling and tenderness are common and usually fade within a day or two. Most people return to normal activities straight away.

  2. First weeks

Protect the skin from strong sun and follow the clinic’s skin-care advice.

  3. Months 2–6

Tightening develops gradually as new collagen forms. Some people choose to repeat treatment after a year or more.

Timelines vary between people. Always follow the aftercare instructions from your treating clinic.

Good to know

Risks and considerations

  • Results are modest, gradual and vary between people. Some see little change.
  • Heat can feel uncomfortable during treatment.
  • Burns, blisters, temporary numbness and, rarely, small dents caused by fat loss are possible.
  • It is not suitable for people with pacemakers or certain implants, or during pregnancy.
FAQ

Common questions

How many sessions are needed?

Usually one. The effect builds over several months, and some people repeat treatment after a year or more.

Is Thermage painful?

Most people feel brief heat with each pulse. The settings can be adjusted, and numbing cream may be used.

Can it replace a facelift?

No. It can tighten mildly lax skin but cannot lift significant sagging or remove skin. The clinician will tell you if surgery would be more suitable.

How is the cost decided?

It depends on the treatment plan the clinician recommends after examining you, for example the areas treated, the amount of product and the number of sessions. You receive a written quote before anything is booked, with no obligation to proceed.
