Why treatment estimates are ranges, not fixed prices

· 4 min read

When you first look into treatment abroad, you will often see prices written as ranges rather than a single figure. That can feel vague, especially when you are trying to plan a budget. There is a good reason for it: until a clinician has assessed your case, nobody can know exactly what treatment you will need. This article explains the main factors that move the number, and how an estimate turns into a firm written quote.

An estimate comes before the examination

An estimate is based on the information available at the start — usually your description, some photos and perhaps a scan. A written quote comes after a clinician has reviewed your case and, in many cases, after an examination in person. The two can differ, and it is better to understand why in advance than to be surprised later.

Hair transplants: the graft count

For hair restoration, the main variable is the number of grafts needed. That depends on the size of the area being treated, the density you are aiming for, and — importantly — how many grafts your donor area can safely provide. Photos give a reasonable first idea, but donor density and hair characteristics are best assessed in person. The technique chosen, such as FUE or DHI, can also affect the plan.

Dentistry: the number of units

Dental estimates are usually built from units: each veneer, crown or implant counts as one. The material makes a difference too, as does any preparatory work. If an examination shows decay, gum problems or a tooth that needs root canal treatment, that work may need to happen first. Implants may also require bone grafting or healing time before the final restoration is fitted.

Staged treatment

Some treatments are best done in stages rather than all at once. Implants often need a healing period of a few months between placement and the final teeth. Large dental or surgical plans may be split across two trips. Staging affects the total number of visits, the travel costs and the overall price.

Hotel nights and logistics

The length of your stay depends on the treatment and on how long you need to rest before flying. More clinic appointments or a longer recovery mean more hotel nights. The hotel category, whether transfers are included, and whether you want an interpreter with you at appointments also change the total.

Your health and history

Existing health conditions, medication and previous procedures can all affect what is safe and what extra tests may be needed. For surgery, pre-operative blood tests or specialist reviews may be required. These are not optional extras; they are part of treating you safely.

Currency

Our estimates are prepared in EUR. Where amounts are shown in GBP, USD or CAD, they are approximate conversions for reference and can change as exchange rates move. The amount on your written quote is the one that applies.

From estimate to written quote

A useful written quote should set out:

  • the treatment being proposed, in plain language;
  • the number of grafts, units or procedures, and the materials or technique;
  • what is included — for example consultations, tests, medication, hotel nights and transfers;
  • what is not included, and what might cost extra;
  • how and when payment is due, and what happens if plans change.

A practical rule

Never transfer money based only on a price you have seen on a website or in a message. Wait for a written quote, read it carefully, and ask about anything that is unclear. If the plan changes after your examination, you should receive an updated quote before any additional treatment goes ahead.

Ranges are not a way of avoiding commitment. They are an honest reflection of what can and cannot be known before a clinician has seen you. For our general price guidance, see Package Rates.
